On the heels of two successful Wayne Cares events, an additional volunteer opportunity is planned for Saturday, May 16. Formerly known as the Motor City Makeover, Midtown Detroit's Spring Clean-Up is a partnership of the University Cultural Center Association (UCCA) and Wayne State University.
Teams of volunteers will help clean and beautify the Midtown area. Volunteer check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. on the first floor of the WSU Welcome Center. Lunch will be provided. To sign-up for this Wayne Cares event, RSVP here.
Wayne Cares is a university outreach initiative of the Office of Government and Community Affairs.
Jackets for Jobs, Volunteer Day
On April 18, about 500 people participated in Volunteer Day. The following Detroit parks were cleaned:
- Cannon Recreation Center and Balduck Park (east side)
- Lipke playfield and Robinwood playground (northeast side)
- Eliza Howell playfield (northwest side)
- Clark Park (southwest side)
More than 400 tires were recovered and recycled. Litter and leaves were collected. In all, hundreds of bags of trash were removed from the parks, which gives Detroit children cleaner and safer environments for summer playtime. See photos of Volunteer Day in Image Gallery.
Also, a clothing drive was held in April. Wayne State community members donated men's and women's business attire. A truckload of donations was delivered to Jacket for Jobs on April 30.
"I would just like to thank everyone who participated in either or both of these events," says Stephanie Fries, associate director of community relations, Office of Government and Community Affairs. "Everyone who volunteers shows the community that Wayne State is committed to making a difference and helping those in need."
